Eligible to apply for Canadian immigration within the category of federal skilled workers if they meet all regulatory requirements. Dental hygienists provide dental hygiene treatments and information related to the Prevention of dental and oral diseases and disorders. Work in dental clinics, hospitals, clinics, educational institutions, government agencies and private companies. Dental therapists provide limited dental services related to the prevention and treatment of diseases and disorders of the teeth and mouth. They are employed by the federal and provincial governments to provide services in rural and remote communities.

Possible main duties

Dental hygienists perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Perform an initial dental assessment and discuss patient care with the dentist.
  • Taking dental impressions
  • Advising patients regarding oral hygiene procedures
  • Cleaning and stimulating gums to prevent gum disease
  • Removing stains and deposits from teeth to prevent tooth decay and roots
  • Application of fluoride therapy
  • Taking and developing X-rays
  • Restorative and orthodontic procedures can be performed under the supervision of a dentist
  • He may supervise dental assistants in their healthcare jobs.

Dental therapists perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Conducting dental evaluations and consulting with the dentist regarding patient care
  • Taking dental impressions
  • Taking and developing X-rays
  • Removing stains and deposits from teeth to prevent tooth decay and roots
  • Application of fluoride therapy
  • Advising patients regarding oral hygiene procedures

Recruitment requirements


  1. Dental hygienists are required to complete an undergraduate program ranging from one to three years, or any other accredited program in dental hygiene recognized by the board of directors within the province or territory of residence.
  2. Dental therapists are required to complete a two-year dental therapy diploma program at the National School of dental therapy in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, which is offered by Health Canada.
  3. A license is required by the appropriate regional or territorial regulatory body for dental hygienists.
  4. Licensing is required for dental therapists in Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
